jQuery is not only a fairly easy javascript language to work with, it is also, when in packaged in a plugin, very easy to install on any web page, making them perfect for non-developers as well. Image galleries, without the spice of js, tend to be bland and featureless. Throw in a little jQuery and you can have a easily customizable feature-rich image gallery that will present your images professionally and beautifully.

The impressive ColorBox is a light-weight (9kb), customizable lightbox gallery plugin with the goal of allowing users to create a customized lightbox that is unique to their project. I love this gallery plugin. It is simple, yet powerful. It is a plugin that supports many transition efects, ir preloades the images, with cations and… hell, it can pretty much do everything you would want from an image gallery. Just have a look at the feature list.

The setup is easy and quick, plus the script is compatiblewith every major browser. It comes with useful APIs so that prettyPhoto can be launched from nearly anywhere (yes, even Flash).
SlidingGallery
The SlidingGallery plug-in will take a group of images and turn them into a cyclical gallery of images which the user can click through. One image will be centered on the screen, with two smaller images off to the sides. The user can click either of the smaller images to bring them to the center, or the center image to enlarge it. For optimal use, this plug-in should be applied to seven or more images, but can work with fewer (images will be duplicated in order to bring the total to seven).
ImageFlow
ImageFlow is an unobtrusive and userfriendly JavaScript image gallery that is perfect for large image galleries (it can support hundreds of images). It even has support for the iPhone.
Fancybox
